About the composer:
Chuck Holdeman graduated in 1968 from Curtis, where his roommate was oboist Richard Woodhams. Both live in Philadelphia where the pandemic summer of 2020 required getting together outdoors. These meetings inspired the Duo, which, movement by movement, was tried out in parks not far from Independence Hall. Chuck studied bassoon with Sol Schoenbach, and later with Maurice Allard in France where he learned the French system bassoon, the instrument he plays exclusively today. He is principal bassoon of the Bach Festival Orchestra of Bethlehem, which he joined in 1969, and is also a member of Philadelphia's new music ensemble Relâche. Chuck also played principal bassoon (German system) for the Delaware Symphony for many years. As a composer he has written songs, two operas, orchestra pieces, much chamber music, and "Concerto tre d'uno" dedicated to Richard Woodhams, premiered by him in 2006, with movements for oboe d'amore, oboe, and English horn. Chuck recently completed "Amuse Oreille" for reed quintet and is at work on three songs based on poems set in Philadelphia.

チャック・ ホールデマン氏は、カーチス音楽院を1968年卒業。リチャード・ウッドハムズ氏とは在学中のルームメイト。パンデミックの2020年夏、両氏が屋外で会うことを余儀なくされたことを機会に、この曲の構想が生まれる。インディペンデンス・ホールからさほど遠くない公園で、各楽章ごとに野外で試演された。ホールデマン氏はファゴットをソル・ショーンバック氏に師事。後にモリス・アラール氏の元で、フランス式ファゴットを学び、現在はフランス式ファゴットのみを使用。1969年よりバッハ・フェスティバル・オーケストラの主席ファゴット奏者を務める他、フィラデルフィアの現代音楽アンサンブルRelâcheでも活躍。デラウェア・シンフォニーでは、主席ファゴット奏者として、ドイツ式ファゴットも長年演奏。作曲家としても、数多くの歌曲、オペラ２曲、オーケストラ曲、多くの室内楽曲を作曲。さらに、リチャード・ウッドハムズ氏により初演された、一楽章ごとにソリストが、オーボエ・ダモーレ、オーボエ、コーラングレと持ち替える「Concerto tre d’uno」がある。最新作はリード楽器五重奏の為の「Amuse Oreille」。現在、フィラデルフィアを題材とした詩による、三つの歌曲の作曲に取り組んでいる。
